It took us two and a half weeks to come in contact with DD's birth mom...I don't believe that's the norm, though.
In Georgia you are not allowed to advertise so we just told every single person we knew that we were wanting to adopt. In my opinion that's the best thing you can do when pursuing an independent adoption...be very vocal about it.
