I'd heard this before, too. The explanation I remember had something to do with carrying on the "family name" - like with adoption, it was no longer necessary to carry on the family name through genetics, so having a boy was seen as less important for that purpose? This was 5 years ago, so I don't really remember the exact explanation we were given. At any rate, I thought it was a dumb reason (that the agency or article gave). I can see wanting a girl or boy for other reasons - same reasons that bio parents are hoping for one sex over the other. We didn't specify either time.
