I'm glad that you got so much great feedback here. My husband is actually in the middle of custody hell with his youngest daughter and we "passed". As was posted, having had a not so perfect childhood/divorce/etc seems to put us in a better position if we can articulate how we worked out our own losses etc. Our caseworker was terrific in assuring us that our having come through our traumas (past and present) in tact indicates our resourcefulness, nonjudgemental attitude, and strength. Be ready to explain how you made it through (therapy, friends, etc).
As to what is next, here in Illinois, after the paperwork came the classes, and home visits. If you are not in PRIDE or your local state classes, see when you can get started (it was 27 hours here in Illinois). We had lots of homework in class that was shared with our caseworker to allow her to understand our history/motivations/skills. She was kind, supportive, and encouraging. I hope that your caseworker is as well.
