I have my own issues with barbies and Bratz. I don't like the way those dolls are designed. But there are many types of family dolls that kids can use with blocks or a dollhouse and I think there is a lot of value in the kind of play where they get to take on the roles of different members of a family. Kids learn so much through that kind of play. It not only lets them explore family roles and dynamics, but the process of creating and acting out a story actually helps develop pre-reading and comprehension skills.
My son is the person that he is. I can love, nurture and appreciate him. I can help teach and guide him. But I cannot make him something that he isn't - no matter what toy I give or refuse him or what interests I allow or discourage. I always want my son to know that I love and accept him unconditionally - whether he turns out to be a rough and tumble boy or a child who wants to wear my dresses and heels.
