Maybe I wasn't clear. I never put them in dresses!! But I certainly wasn't going to limit the boys' choices in what they could wear in the dramatic play area while the girls got to dress in any of the costumes. And they are just costumes. I think we put a lot of baggage on certain gendered behavior and give it meaning that it absolutely does not have for the kids. These were 5-year-olds after all. Why shame them when they are just playing? A lot of boys like to dress up in mommy's clothes or wear purses or pretend to nurse a baby - and it doesn't mean a thing about their gender identity or sexual orientation. They are just imitating the most important person in their lives.
