I have a son adopted from fc who was exposed to cocaine, marijuana, and possibly alcohol. He DID NOT go thru any withdrawls after delivery. He has been with us since he was 24 hrs. old. He is the cutest most loving child! Has a temper on him, and he knows what he wants!!
He has been in PT since 4 mths old. He continues to go weekly. He has very tight muscles in his hips and heel cords which make his gait abnormal. Can he walk yes; will he ever be a professional athlete no. Everyone involved feels he will be able to run and play with all the other kids. He is going to be having serial casting done on his legs with possible Botox injections to help. He is speech delayed; he does not mimic at all and the only thing he says is DaDa. He JUST started babbling at 13mths. after he had tubes put in his ears. He is seen by OT. We have allergies which cause him to have pretty bad eczema; so he routinely sees an allegist. He sees a developmental ped. He sees a pulmonologist. Basically our son is a full time job. We have two other kids so I try to manage my time very wisely. We did not get an adoption subsidy for him just medicaid.
No two drug exposed kids will be the same. We always think things could have been much worse and we still really don't know what his future will hold. If you decide to take a drug exposed baby educate yourself and make sure you know what resources are available to you in your community.
