DH had a My Buddy doll when he was little and he loved that thing. He still talks about it.
Personally I don't think dolls are a big deal. I tease my BIL all the time because he's so, ah, phobic he won't let his DS even touch a doll. If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.
One time he took one away from D and I laughed. He said something like, well you won't let yours play with cars or GI Joes or something like that.
I just looked at him and shook my head and said of course I will!
My brothers used to beg to play Barbies with me. These are also the boys who would strap firecrackers to their GI Joes they didn't like anymore to see what would happen. Dad still finds Joe body parts every now and then embedded in the lawn.
