I second the pullups. They're one of the best inventions. They tear off at the hips if you want to open them like a regular diaper and not remove all the clothes (and then put on a regular diaper) otherwise they work just like undies. And you can reuse the same one all day if they stay clean and dry, otherwise accidents aren't any more of a problem than they were with diapers. I love them.

We actually cloth diapered DD for the most part and considered the cloth training pants with a vynal cover when it was time to potty train so she could have the underwear experience, but cleaning poo out of underpants--and more importantly getting those underpants off without making a huge mess--is SUCH A PAIN. So we used pullups for about 6 weeks while she got the hang of potty training. She did great, so one box of about 60 got us through until we could switch completely to big girl pants. Cost wise it wasn't much more than if I had to buy 5-6 pair of training underwear and the vynal pants and environmentally I figured one box of disposable pullups wasn't so bad considering we'd skipped the whole diaper phase.

Good luck!
