My maternal grandfather was an executive with ARAMCO (Arabian-American Oil Co.), and he lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in the expatriate compound during the 1940's and 1950's. When I was a little girl, he liked to gross me out with stories of strange things he'd seen in his life. The story I remember oh so well took place in the early '50s, when he was invited to dine one evening with the royal family...this is when "old" King Saud was around versus "young" King Faisal or the royal princes. One of the most questionable delicacies to be served that evening was a huge platter of lambs' eyes. When I asked him how he could possibly eat lambs' eyes, he told me that it would have been rude to not taste them...that they were only served to guests of honor. I'm glad I wasn't there, YUCK!!!
