I heard from an adoption attorney that if a birth parent is promised an open adoption and you were induced into the adoption with the openness in mind, and then the adoptive family would not honor their heart commitment, that it could possible be challenged.

What a shame that there is an adoption professional saying these types of things. It gives false 'hope' to birth parents and undue fear to adoptive parents.

Every state in the US that has "Open Adoption" or "Cooperative Adoption" laws on the books specifically state that failure to not maintain the openness is not grounds to overturn or challenge an adoption.

At best, they offer the promise of mediation - even then, future contact is no guarantee. At worst, they are worthless pieces of paper that mean nothing.

Please, research and understand the laws in your state. Then, retain an attorney and make sure that YOUR rights (and the rights of your unborn child) are being represented.
