I finished reading it. The map, like all of National Geographic's maps, was great.
Without giving too much away, the issue isn't always flattering of China, especially when it comes to talking about the environment.
But, it was really insightful and definitely worth the money. They didn't pull any punches, but I think that made it much more enjoyable.
