You can use credit or debit cards. Yes, there will usually be a fee. Yes, contact your credit card company before you travel. Visa and Mastercard are most widely accepted.
When using a credit/debit card I am often asked for identification. Be sure you have a copy of your passport with you. (Some places won't accept a copy, however. Some will only accept the original passport.)
