Lori. . .
How ridiculous! Is the Bank Manager trying to make a personal statement about your adoption situation? Is there a supervisor that could be contacted regarding the importance of this time? If so, I would encourage it and in writing using other employee leave examples. Although this small agency is not required to conform to Federal Leave standards, would they deny her the opportunity to care for a terminal parent or sibling? I would submit the intention to take leave in writing and assume that the time is approved. Would they terminate her if she did so? This is such a joyous time and so infuriating that you have to deal with this. Be diligent in demanding that they treat you just as any new parents would be treated. I contacted our Human Resources Department to inquire about maternity leave while we were still in the waiting stage. Our private Social Services company had not experienced an employee who adopted before and did not have a policy of paying leave. I discussed with my boss and wrote a letter to HR; needless to say, I was paid for 12 weeks, and now there is a policy for future adoptive parents. Wishing you luck.
