In the meantime, if she chooses not to quit working for them, would it be possible for her to request her leave time to begin after yours ends? (I'm assuming you were hoping to both be home with baby at the same time, but you may have already thought of this.) Then it'd be twice the at-home time before he needs to begin daycare, and he gets extra one-on-one time with each of you. Not what you wanted, I'm sure, but something to think about as an option to quitting.
I sure hope they change their minds, though! Can she appeal to the adoptive mother off company time? If any "paternity" type leave has ever been taken by anyone, could she appeal that this is the same thing (she's not giving birth, but the baby is hers nonetheless)? Or maybe she can talk to the person who is already scheduled for vacation - not to give her a guilt trip, but to see if it's possible for her to trade that vacation time for a different time? It never hurts to ask, at least.
