Personally, I collect those things as I go, if the things in question are free and in great condition. If they're not, then you can always find at least as good a deal at a garage sale in the Spring or Summer.
A note of caution though - I've been told that car seats should not be picked up at garage sales or thrift shops or used at all, unless you happen to be a good friend of the person donating it and are sure it has not been in any accidents and that it is not older than 5 years old.
