Unmarried hetero couples have it hard.

Depends on the county's policy and preference. Some areas would choose a gay couple over a heterosexual unmarried couple. Seems unfair but the fact that you're not a citizen
and not legally married would probaly count against you. Your
partner would in essence be adopting as a single man.
