Generally, for travel to Canada the "most" you will need is a copy of a birth certificate. Depending on how diligent you want to be, you could also take your son's green card and adoption decree. The US and Canada still have fairly lax identification requirements, even post-9/11. My husband was there earlier this year and all they asked for was his driver's license. (although he had his passport, just in case)

We are traveling within the US next month and that's what I will be taking (airlines).
