My suggestion is to check out as many current books about adoption as possible. In answer to 'the costs'.....they can be as varied as $3,000-$30,000. Once you have read up on things.....I'd suggest talking with an attorney (some have free orientations...ours did).....and an agency. An educated decision is the best, as you know.
In regards to your debt.....that will be for you to decide. Certainly, if you go private adoption (private agency or attorney), there will be costs to consider. However, if you go 'older child adoption' through your state system (and rarely there are infants available...but it does happen).......the cost will be free and a monthly stipend is often given to help offset the cost of raising a child with special needs.
Good luck in whatever you decide.
Sincerely,
Linny
