I'm not sure from your posting how you're planning on pursuing adoption - via international, domestic parental placement or foster care/waiting child adoption. If you're considering domestic parental placement adoption, good books to read are:

The Open Adoption Experience by Lois Molina
Adopting in America: How to Adopt Within One Year by Randall Hicks
Dear Birthmother by Kathleen Silber
Adoption Without Fear by James Gritter

You may find most if not all of these books available at your local library as well as in bookstores and online to purchase.

A good (I've heard) book on international adoption is:

How to Adopt Internationally: A Guide for Agency-Directed and Independent Adoptions (2000 Edition) by Jean Nelson-Erichsen.

A good magazine to subscribe to (may also be available at your library) is Adoptive Families. Gives a good balance of experiences from all types of adoption.
