Home schooling pre-first grade is pretty relaxed. My daughter is four and I claim to be home pre-schooing her because we spend time reading, talking and playing every day. I would say the caution is to not get too academic too soon. Kids learn best by playing at this age. For example, understanding fractions begins by kids playing with blocks (they are divided into halves, quarters, etc.) A lot of fun, enriching things can be done before 1st grade that can make learning so much fun they don't know they are learning.

I worry about people trying to teach all the letters of the alphabet and how to read before 1st or 2nd grade but if they fall into it naturly fine.
