Although open adoption is becoming more common, it is not the norm in adoptions in every county or state. When you contact your DHSS for information, I would suggest you let them know that you are interested in an open adoption. If they are not experienced with the open adoption process, they can contact the Permanent Family Options program here at our Center, 925-827-2229. PFO is working towards making open adoption available to families adopting through the public agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area, and would be happy to talk with your DHSS about how to facilitate open adoption.
