I just wanted to add that even if a baby tests positive for HIV early on, he will sometimes revert back to negative as he gets a little older. So, don't be alarmed if he does test positive at some point. He could be just forming antibodies and may not develop the infection.

The HIV test is actually a test for the presence of antibodies, not for the presence of the virus.

I am a former HIV testing counselor and I spent a lot of time with HIV+ clients. The majority of babies born to HIV+ mothers do not become HIV+ themselves.

That said, treat the baby as if he were HIV+, meaning use "universal precautions." Use gloves EVERY TIME you change his poopy diaper. Don't share a toothbrush or utensils with the baby or drink after him, although transmission through saliva is extremely rare. Obviously be aware of a bloody nose or any sort of blood spills.

Don't be afraid to hug and kiss the baby. That's fine. He needs lot of touching and cuddling.
