Frankly for us it was a couple things:

1 - I have a "soft spot" for that part of the world bc of my year as an exchange student in a nearby country. But, every day I was crying by the time I was done walking home from school because seeing all the starving kids alongside the road made me so sad. Fast forward a few years, and we decided to adopt from the poorest country we could. Haiti def fits that bill.

2 - My H and I are kind of on the "young" side for adopting- I'm 28 and he's 33. And, we both have good jobs, but late 20s/early 30s are not exactly a time in your life when you're flush with spare cash. Haiti is extremely affordable compared to other countries.

3 - You have to stay in Haiti a week vs months at a time like some other countries. I want to use my FMLA leave to bond with the child and get him used to his new home/family, not be tied up in some foreign court.

Ultimately, I could sit here and justify it all day, but the biggest reason is just that Haiti feels right.
