I adopted through the state foster care system, and I suffer from severe clinical depression. I do not have 'manic' episodes, and I have no criminal history. I will say that they asked A LOT of questions about my illness at each stage of the process, but it went just fine - I now have a gorgeous two year-old daughter!

As everyone has said, honesty - total and complete - is always best. Try to focus on what your husband has done to deal with his illness, and what plans and contingency plans you have in place in case he has another episode or experiences pharmacological "breakthrough". One reason I have decided to adopt, rather than have bio children, is that I do not want to pass this horrible mental illness on to them. I know only half of what your husband suffers, but I surely sympathize with you both. Good luck.
