I was adopted as an infant from India. Both of my parents were born and raised in the midwest.

1. My adoptive mother was a missionary nurse to India before I was adopted, so she was more familiar with the country. My adoptive dad traveled to India for about a month to pick up my younger brother, who is also adopted from India. Neither my mom or dad can speak the language. Their strongest connection to the culture of India was when I was very young. It is not so strong now.

2. Their connection then is comforting to me now, to see how they grew to love the country, and truly loved the people before they considered adoption. The lack of connection now can be scary sometimes because of the lack of information about my birth family, in a time of my life when I want to know more about them.
