Dixie, I am so sorry that things did not work out for you at your job! BTW - I am also an exempt (salaried) employee, and where I work, that means that you put in the hours that are required to fulfill your job requirements. This type of compensation status generally is used when the workload fluctuates from time to time in your role, and they then don't have to worry about paying OT or docking salary during slower weeks. There is no expectation to put in more time than in a traditionally compensated or hourly job. (Occasionally I have to work 50 hours a week, but sometimes I only work 35 hours.) Companies that use this as an excuse to force expectations for uncompensated overtime are unethical in my book!

I know it is hard, but this will give you the opportunity to spend some extra time with your son. If you do decide to go back to work, I feel certain a better opportunity is waiting for you. Sometimes these things are "supposed to" happen. If you do interview for another job, just tell them you chose to leave because you were seeking a more balanced life. You don't need to give the details, and if they are a good company, they will understand this!

Enjoy this time with your family, whether you choose to stay home for only a while, or for a long time. It sounds to me like your job was not a good fit. You were "supposed to" move on! Good luck!!
