Wow! My husband just called an hour or so ago, and said he was going to go in and talk to his boss about our adoption. He needs Friday off because we have scheduled our first meeting with our facilitator, our attorney and the birthmom. Up until now, he has only told two people at his work that we are adopting. He thinks they will all say we are insane! (Because we already have 6 kids) He is very apprehensive about talking to his boss, but now he doesn't have a choice. He may also ask if the company would give us any adoption benefits (if the boss' mood is good). But since he works for a fairly small company (about 50 employees), we doubt if they will offer anything.

We are hoping to be present at the birth of our baby, so he may have to leave at a moment's notice also (the birthmom lives over 1 1/2 hrs from where we live). Since the baby is due in Jan. and the winter months are very slow for his business, that probably won't be a problem. He probably won't take more than a week off when the baby is born, since I'm a stay-at-home mom. He has plenty of vacation time saved up for it.

I guess I would just let them know that you might be called away at a moment's notice. I'm pretty sure that due to the federal Family Leave Act, employers are required to give you time off (without pay, if you don't have vacation time) for the birth of a baby, whether it is bio or adopted. Also, they have to hold your job open for you when you are ready to return.

Good luck!
