I'd go interview a couple of lawyers first so that you can find one you feel comfortable with and have an idea of what you are looking at in terms of cost.
Talk with them about whether they assist with finding birthmothers (some have a loose network because they've done adoption work for a long time, others want you to do the legwork on finding a PBM) Ask questions about how the process works in your state---have them walk you through each step. Also ask about the attorney's fee structure---is it a flat rate or per hour charge? Do they require a retainer? How much?
Do they have a list of recommendations for birthmother services (e.g.medical/counseling)? Have they handled a contested adoption before? What was the outcome? How are birthmother expenses handled, and what are the restrictions in your state on those expenses? What kinds of expenses should you expect to pay for?
Can the attorney provide referrals if the pbm needs or wants her own counsel?
If you go back through the threads on this board, you'll see some other good questions to ask.
Good luck!
