We bought an extra seat and it was worth every penny. We held her the entire time, but we had room to operate--put diaper bags--etc. Plus with a seat we got the following perks. Extra luggage, more food and hence more food variety so she could eat solids (baby food was never a big hit with Lydia and once we gave her table food in China there was no turning back) plus it kept the row to just the family. Best thing we did was buy that extra seat!
