According to their website, they will not take your papers in person. I have also not heard of same day fingerprinting from the Detroit office. If I can just give a little advice... make sure you have everything together before you send it in. Also, if you have previous homestudies, you may just want to include them since they are asking for them anyways. We had to re-do our I-171h in June. It took 3 weeks from recipt of papers to fingerprint appointment and then another 5-6 weeks for the actual I-171h. I'm not sure if there is a good average right now. It does however seem to have speeded up since earlier in the year.
If you would like more feedback on this, there is a Michigan International Adoption group on yahoo...let me know if you want me to pm you the actual link. They do keep a database and it has quite a few members on it.
