I have sent packets of pictures and a letter a few times. I use a 6 x 9 manila envelope with a piece of cardboard to keep it flat. It is about $12 to send it registered mail with a return receipt. The package always arrives within two weeks, but I usually don't get the return postcard back for another 4 weeks after that.

I use the post office where my Mom lives because there is a state university there and the post office is used to dealing with international mail. We live in a city of over 100,000 people but our post office has just no clue when it comes to sending anything internationally.
