I think the "it hurts their feelings, you wouldn't want your feelings hurt like that" approach may work. I know it's so embarrassing when kids say something like that. I've gotton pretty good at heading them off...when my kids are in the grocery store and I see them eyeing up someone that they may say something about and then they say the telltale "mom, mom, mom" (while hitting my leg) I usually say (child) we will talk about whatever it is in the car. If it was a remark, then they will listen to me. If it is "can I have some skittles" then they will keep talking.
