DH was involved, I was the orchestrator though
He carded, left flyers, talked to people, put signs up in his car, etc. He just waited for me to tell him what we were doing next. Which I did in droves, being the professional planner I am (really, I'm certified in it!).
What's important is that he not be DISengaged. He's got to "own" it, to participate and commit, for you both to really be successful.
