My dad built Henry a swing set in the backyard when he was about 17 months. I had been given an infant swing as a gift at my shower, and then spent a couple hundred dollars to have a swingset built to hang it from. How goofy is that. I figured it was an investment that Henry would get enjoyment out of for quite some time.
I can't really think of anything expensive that Henry had before he was 2. Really, his favorite toy was the big cardboard box that the new TV came in. He could play with that for hours and it's still in the playroom a year later.
Now that he's a little older, a couple of toys that I feel required a little bit of 'investment' is his Peg Perego ride-on train. He doesn't play with it often, but when he does, he really enjoys it.
The other thing that I have no regrets spending a little bit of money on is his train table (see a train theme here?). He plays with this every day (time permitting) and we enjoy adding new configurations and new trains to it, on occasion. Each time he plays with it, he seems to have a little bit different of a focus or way that he plays. So it's like every day, it's a new toy to him.
