Talk to him about it...explain what is going to happen...and then promise a treat...I bribe my kids with McDonald's... 
I have always taken the kids alone...just keep talking to him..reassure him...don't let him know how upset you are...I help hold them...talk to them...give lots of love before, during, and after.
Make a big deal about how well he did...and don't let him know how upsetting it is to you...I know easier said than done.
