Please read information on adoption from India at the following websites:

1. U.S. State Department. http://travel.state.gov/family/adopt...untry_398.html

2. Indian Embassy. http://www.indianembassy.org/consula...chapter_2.html

3. Central Adoption Resource Administration (Indian government bureau involved in all adoptions). http://www.cara.nic.in/

4. ICHILD (great website for families adopting from India). http://www.ichild.org/basics.htm

Although I am not an expert on Indian adoption, my understanding from sources like the above is that you may not be able to do a private adoption. Unless things have changed, you have to work through a U.S. agency approved by CARA, and the child must be deemed eligible for international adoption by the Voluntary Coordinating Agency in India.

If you are an Indian citizen living in the U.S. on a permanent resident or other visa, remember that U.S. law requires at least one spouse to be a U.S. citizen, in order for a child to receive an adoption visa to enter the U.S.
