I think your mother was just not responsible in her choice of mates.
I do however think a child should be an infant whos father is unknown or relenquiesed his rights, or old enough to decide for him/herself what they want. The kids have a right to know and understand the process.As you stated a 7 year old is not going to be able to do that.
