we did the same thing, we celebrated Max's birthday.
I made cupcakes and bought him a gift, card and we lite his candle and took pictures.

We gave him his gift when he got home a month later and took more pictures of him with it. It was a bouncy car. He loves it.

We were allowed to send a gift to the orphanage for his birthday. I sent a small toy rattle but I don't think they really gave it to him. We did get it back and he acted like he never saw it before.

It is more for you so celebrate and know that on this first birthday he does have someone to love him and pray for him, that is more than he had before.
